The cost of Celebrex, a painkiller used to treat painful conditions, is set to go up to more than $300 million by the end of 2017, according to a new survey released yesterday by the American Academy of Family Physicians. The study, by Dr. Raghu Bhalla, a urologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, will examine the cost of Celebrex, a prescription drug used for treating arthritis and other conditions in people over the age of 60.
The price is set to go up to more than $300 million annually by 2017, and it is expected to reach $300 million by 2017, Dr. Bhalla said. He added that some drugs may be more expensive than others, especially those used to treat pain or inflammation.
But Celebrex, which has been available for about a decade, has not been as expensive as the previous generation of drugs. About half of the prescriptions for Celebrex were written in the United States, while half of the prescriptions written for the other class of medications, including pain relievers, antacids and antipsychotics, are in Europe and the United States.
The analysis also shows that Celebrex has not been as effective for preventing heart attacks, strokes and cancer. But it has been prescribed to people with high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease who have been on high doses of antihypertensive drugs, Dr.
